Background: This privately owned dwelling was purchased by the Autistic Society for use as a Day Training Centre. Their application to Council provided very scant details and they have never been upfront with their overall intentions. This lack of information was the main initial concern of M.R.G.. Council has approved the application provided ‘certain requirements’ are met for parking, hours of use, landscaping etc. Unfortunately the Society has not met some of these requirements – or has ignored them completely.
In March 2005, various 1.8meter high wooden paling fence sections were constructed around parts of the front and within the property. These fences did not meet building requirements for our particular area and, following rejection by council, part of the front section has now been replaced by a 1.8 meter black metal fence.
M.R.G. Stance & Activities: M.R.G. are not opposed to the concept of an Autistic Training Centre operating out of this location. However our group has concerns, as does Council, that the alterations to the building and property need to be appropriate to the area.. For example, M.R.G. believes the height of the wooden fence recently constructed at the front left side of the property, abutting 6 Webster Avenue, needs to be reduced in height and/or sloped in line with other fences in the immediate vicinity. Another issue of concern is the number of mini-busses and other vehicles, currently being used and/or parked on the property, which far exceeds their original permit conditions.
Current Status: Alterations are currently underway to the building and property so that the council requirements, as well as those of the local residents, are properly addressed. However there are still some serious ongoing concerns relating to the manner in which this entire development was originally approved by a particular Council Planning Officer, and which have yet to be fully investigated and resolved.
